Residential snow removal
Snow Removal in Bloomington, MN
Driveways, front walks, steps and the berm the city plow leaves at the end of the drive. No plow company on file? Call us the morning of.
Do I need a season contract to get my driveway plowed?
Not to call AJS. Andrew takes one-off calls from homeowners, so you can ask for a single plow on the day you need it, without signing up for a whole season. That matters because some plow companies want a signed contract in place before they will start, and that does not help when the storm has already hit and the driveway is buried.
Snow that gets driven on packs down and turns to ice, which is why a buried driveway is easier to deal with the first morning than the third.
Tell us what needs clearing: the driveway, the front walk, the steps, the berm the city plow left across the end of the drive, or the ice under all of it. Snow removal here is for homes in Bloomington and across the Twin Cities. Say which jobs you want when you get in touch, and what the driveway looks like this morning.

The four spots
What we clear
Four places on a house lot where snow causes trouble. Tell us which ones you need and we will plan the job around them.
-
The driveway
From the garage door out to the street. This is the plow job: the truck, the blade and the pavement showing again.
-
The apron and the berm
The apron is the flared stretch where your driveway meets the street. The berm is what the city plow leaves across it: a heavy ridge of packed snow and ice that plows you back in right after you shoveled.
-
The front walk
The path from the street or the drive to your front door. Snow here gets walked on, packs down and turns to ice, so it is worth clearing whenever the driveway is.
-
The steps
The last few feet to the door, and the spot where people slip. Say you want them done when you get in touch, so they are on the job.
Tell us which of the four you need.

Ice and salt
What salt does, and when it stops working
Ice makes a driveway unsafe before it looks bad. Salt lowers the temperature at which water freezes, so the ice turns to brine and lets go of the pavement. It needs a thin layer of ice to work on and a little moisture to get started.
It has a limit. Above about 25 degrees Fahrenheit it works well. Near 15 it is slow. Much colder than that it barely works at all, and spreading more does not change that. In a deep freeze, getting the snow off the surface does more than salt will.
…We had just gotten a small ice storm that had made our driveway very icy and slippery making it unsafe to walk on. I called AJS to see if they could salt it for us and Andrew was more than happy to come out right away in a timely manner. He communicated everything very well before the service and actually explained what the salt is going to do and how it works.…

Snow removal questions in Bloomington
Do I need a season contract to get my driveway plowed in Bloomington?
No. AJS takes one-off calls, so you can ask for a single plow on the day you need it without signing up for a whole season. Some plow companies want a contract in place first, which does not help when the storm has already hit. Tell us what needs clearing and we will tell you what we can do.
How much does snow removal cost in Bloomington?
The price depends on the job, so we do not post one here. What changes it is the size of the driveway, how much snow came down, and whether you also want the front walk, the steps and the berm at the end of the drive cleared. Describe what you need when you ask for a quote and we will price that.
Will you clear the berm the city plow leaves at the end of my driveway?
Yes. The berm is the heavy ridge of packed snow and ice the city plow pushes across the end of your driveway, and it is a job we take on. Lance Fletcher contacted Andrew about a major berm at the end of his driveway and had it taken care of. Mention the berm when you ask for a quote.
Do you clear front walks and steps, or just the driveway?
We do all three. The driveway is the plow work, and the front walk and steps can go on the same job. Katie Vogel had a driveway and sidewalk cleared, and Mohamud had a driveway and steps done on the hard snow days. Tell us which ones you want so none gets missed.
Can you salt my driveway when it is icy?
Yes. Jessika Luczynski called after a small ice storm left her driveway too slippery to walk on, and asked AJS to salt it. Salt lowers the point at which water freezes, but it slows down near 15 degrees Fahrenheit and barely works much colder. Ask us about the ice when you get in touch.
Which towns do you plow in?
AJS plows residential driveways in Bloomington, Minneapolis, Saint Paul, Brooklyn Park, Plymouth, Maple Grove, Woodbury, Eagan, Eden Prairie and West Coon Rapids. If you are near one of those towns but not in it, ask us when you get in touch and we will tell you.
